In the final edition of our Melbourne Survival Guide, we have a different format, and a special guest Melbournian to run you through some great coffee places.

Introducing Michael “EmJaeCaer” Carmody of Legacy Esports to give you his perspective crossing good coffee over with some alley bashing.

The true art of the alley bash, has a few key rules.
– You must minimise the usage of MAJOR East-West roads, if it has “Little” in the name then you are good.
– You are not allowed to use a Major North-South road at all. This defeats the entire purpose of exploring the nooks and crannies of this amazing city.
– You must get lost and backtrack your steps at least twice.

Click the Google Maps icons to open the app direct to any of these locations!

Alley bashing was highlighted in the last Survival Guide and so I aim to prove just why this particular activity is very Melbourne and well worth the investment of your time.

Start at the Elizabeth St exit of Flinders St station, and cross over into Degraves St. This is your first Melbourne Alley. Breathe it in. But this is touristy, we are going deep folks, hold onto your belt buckles.

On your way through is Tulip Coffee with an orange aesthetic I can’t help but feel Tim Wendel’s Dutch influences. It’s a cramped hole in the wall and the coffee is okay. This will become a theme.

Degraves Espresso is just up the alley and is very iconic and touristy. Escape North onto Flinders Lane. Just across is Centre Place. It’s a very Harry Potter-like alley yielding to a more commercial plaza as you approach Collins St. Cross Collins St, and head a little left to find the amazing tiled mosaic walkways of The Block Arcade. As always take your time to admire all the details crafted into these buildings.

Through to Little Collins and ‘head west young person’ until you cross Elizabeth St and hit Industry Beans. It has a pristine aesthetic which brooks no confusion that coffee is a process to be perfected through precise craft. It’s a stronger brew using their “Coffee on Tap” process that will amaze you with how quick your coffee arrives fresh and hot, they have a distinct bean roasting flavour from their own beans.

Further down Little Collins heading West, opposite the famous 8bit is a smaller coffee place that’s part of a chain, called ‘Ina Rush’ with okay coffee (too much sweetened almond milk, overpowers the coffee) “for Melbourne”. But it’s one I can recommend for a wide range of fresh soups ready to go, a key comfort in Melbourne’s amazing climate. Here we are near the legal heart of town, there will be many suits. GG EZ is a sparrow’s fart around the corner, but that’s for tonight!

Head North on McKillop St and cross Bourke St. Head for the Maccas grab a cheeky snack if you need, and head up Hardware Lane. Once you hit Little Bourke, turn right.

Now for my pick of the Best Coffee Place. Brother Baba Budan.

You will walk past it. Probably twice, despite the gold lettering on the window. The quintessential Melbourne hole in the wall, with a sterling reputation.

Very smooth and very distinctive roast. They revel in their own flavour and create a distinctive quality coffee that you won’t find anywhere else. Savour it, I am sorry for destroying your coffee experience forevermore by comparison.

East on Little Bourke towards the shopping district heart of Melbourne. Venture here with a blindfolded partner and stout hip pocket. Navigate the entrance past H&M, and head north into the shopping centre, ducking past Uniqlo and keep threading your way through this shiny, over polished merchant maze until you emerge onto Lonsdale St under neath the pedestrian bridge into Melbourne Central OR are walking across it. Avert your eyes from the unholy perversion that is Nespresso. Cross into Melbourne Central the left ventricle of Melbourne’s shopping heart, with a nod to T2 for the non coffee plebs out there as you pass through.

Cross Little Lonsdale and approach the northernmost natural boundary of Melbourne’s CBD grid, Melbourne Central through to Latrobe St. North of here we start to morph into Carlton, Brunswick and the University precincts, but without limiting the scope, this article would never end. EB Games is here, as well as the underground Melbourne Central station connecting you to anywhere else (except of course, the airport…) make sure to reach the atrium on the hour to observe the cheesy and touristy show put on by the giant watch opposite the lead shot tower.

Now for the return journey. Head East from the watch and emerge on Swanston St and cross to the State Library lawn. The library itself is worth a visit but onward we travel for now.

Skirt around the entrance of the Library to the south east, and past Strike Bowling Bar and back into Little Lonsdale heading east. We’re heading for the Paris end of town.

Cross over Russell St, and head down Hayward Lane. Cross Lonsdale and look really hard for Corrs Lane. Yes it is the tiny crack between two Asian food places. Head south, and we are into the heart of China Town.

Left on Little Bourke and then after 100m right into Market Lane. A beer at Hofbrauhaus is acceptable at this point.

You emerge on to Bourke St, cross carefully as we are at the Business End of Melbourne. Walk across the plaza of Southern Cross Lane, don’t make eye contact with anyone. Most people here are soulless corporate types and public servants. AXIL coffee roasters used to be indie and Melbourne hipster. But became too successful and now run shops in places like this. Coffee is STILL better than Sydney’s though.

A quick dogleg into Pink Lane and if your bold cut through Collins Quarter to emerge on Collins St. Otherwise for a less trespass-ey feel you can walk down exhibition street. Or the 120 Collins St building lobby. This is the Parisian boutique end of Melbourne and the centre of its Commercial heart. Enter the lobby of 101 Collins St, admire the art, but head for the rear entrance onto Flinders Lane.

Garden State Hotel is a great venue, non gaming related for a lunchtime meal and beer. But we are here for one reason only.

AC/DC Lane.

This is the beginning of Melbourne graffiti mural laneways. Amazing art, stupid taggers, official and unofficial, it’s a very unique part of the Melbourne CBD. Walk west on Flinders Lane and cross over Russel St again. A nod to Chin Chin for AMAZING food, if you can fit it in and afford it, your taste buds will thank you, and forgive you for or all the crap you made them endure in your life thus far.

Just over Russell St is the last southward alley to bash in our epic journey. Hosier Lane

Epic art, and many people taking photos. Oh and the bloody Culture Kings store who stupidly thought their entrance wouldn’t get tagged opening a store in a graffiti lane. smdh.

Grab a coffee from the Youth Projects to support a good cause and reward yourself for experiencing Melbourne in the best way possible. South of here is the previously Snowball mentioned ACMI, in Fed Square, which is just across from Flinders St Station our departure point.

Thank you for taking this trip around Melbourne with me!

What this is, is a guide for you to follow, get lost, and discover Melbourne’s unique charm. Use this a signpost, and understand why I advocate for this amazing city as strongly as I do.

That does it for the Melbourne Survival Guide from Snowball Esports. Be sure to grab your tickets to the Melbourne Esports Open if you haven’t already.

Top 3 is pretty much all but locked in seeming a clear cut above the rest has me longing for 2nd vs 3rd final of the gauntlet.

After I was relatively harsh on the Bombers in my prediction piece they’ve made me eat humble pie and could be taking the first series in the gauntlet after clinching their gauntlet spot.

With 2-0 being the only result that matters for Legacy, it’s a really big ask and they’ll be disappointed about their season, however it’s not quite over yet and there is still a small window for them to make a recovery.

Legacy aren’t the only casualty, while Avant had ambitions to drop the 5th place tag they’ve sadly found themselves out of playoff contention.

Let Andrew know what you think of his power rankings on Twitter @AWray7

With just a week left the playoff picture is becoming clearer, and it’s also helping a lot with figuring out which teams are the best in the region. The feeling is that the top three is likely locked as we head into finals, but the middle of the rankings are a bit more muddled.

Bombers have made a big move up with their win on the weekend, and despite the big difference between their win/loss compared to the big three they’re beginning to feel more like a gauntlet team. I also almost put Tectonic into the seventh slot and think they are on equal footing with Avant Gaming at the moment. Interesting final match for them both considering their current levels.

Let Isaac know what you think of his power rankings on Twitter @mcintyre_lol

The race for playoffs continues with Legacy and MAMMOTH fighting for their chance after Bombers secured their spot with a victory over MAMMOTH on the weekend.

Each of these teams are on close to equal footing. For this reason Bombers move into 4th and MAMMOTH move into 6th. While Legacy may hold the victory over Bombers in week 8, it is difficult to justify a rise in the rankings following a 2-0 defeat – even if it were to the Chiefs.

Let Callum know what you think of his power rankings on Twitter @CDMLoL

As keen as I am for next week’s Dire Wolves/ORDER showdown as an ORDER fan, you’re kidding yourself if you think all eyes aren’t on the MAMMOTH/Legacy clash.

Legacy need a 2-0 to get to the gauntlet, and MAMMOTH need only to win 1 game in that best of 3. It’s do or die time for these teams and this gauntlet is looking spicier and spicier.

A quick note on power rankings: Power Rankings are different to how one would traditionally rank teams. Normal rankings are a bit more based on ability than results. In a traditional ranking if one team beat another you could still rank them lower if you thought they were still worse than the team they beat. Power Rankings are by definition recency-biased and results-focused and are more of a snapshot of how a team looks right now than how they have looked throughout the year or how they project overall. A bad loss may see a team drop below a team most would see them as being better than. A string of losses can see a team tumble down the rankings.

No changes this week in my rankings as results fall as expected. The big talking point for me this week however is can Legacy close the gap in the standings with 2 weeks to go?

Bombers may have done enough to get them selves over the line with Legacy having to take a game off either MAMMOTH or Chiefs assuming Bombers are sacked 0-2 next two series.

Let Andrew know what you think of his power rankings on Twitter @AWray7

We’re somewhat returning to some split 1 normalcy here – the top and bottom of my list should look pretty darn familiar. I think the first three are a no-brainer, and I’m pretty convinced on the bottom 2 as well. AV have a real chance to break into the dogfight for the final gauntlet spots, but as we stand right now there’s a slight gap between them and 4-5-6.

And this 4-5-6 split is where all the fun happens. Right now I think that MAMMOTH is the most talented of these teams, but they’re struggling a bit getting it all to fire. They look dominant when they do, but it doesn’t happen often. I also think that sometimes they make things harder on themselves than they need to and it really makes them look worse than they are when things go south. Legacy have had the best results and have looked like making at least some of the improvements they needed to make. Decoy producing a really good Rakan performances out of a string of terrible ones was a huge help, and I thought his Alistar was encouraging as well. Bombers can’t get out of their own way. Sometimes it’s okay to be a predictable team when you can do your Plan A so well. These three teams are super-close together but based on how they’ve been lately, this is how I see them shaking out.

Let Reece know what you think of his power rankings on Twitter @LoLTies

This week is very simplistic, with no tough decisions. Legacy and Bombers switching places after Legacy won 2-1 while AV continue to push for the 6th place position taking a map off ORDER.

Let Callum know what you think of his power rankings on Twitter @CDMLoL

More shifting for me in the bottom end. Legacy jumping a couple of spots after their match against Bombers.

With the results this week only providing one upset Tectonic have found them selves sliding down the ranks while the rest of the pecking order remains relatively unchanged.

Let Andrew know what you think of his power rankings on Twitter @AWray7

Pretty boring top 4, we have 3 clear best teams. MAMMOTH look the next best overall, and I don’t think they should be getting penalised below fourth for getting well handled by the DW.

I agonised over LGC vs BMR as both teams have an identical win and you can make a very strong case that Bombers’ win over TTC was more impressive than Legacy’s. In the end I think that Legacy have looked better in their losses than the Bombers have – but obviously when I’m making this fine a gradation between two squads they’re both on pretty equal footing.

Tectonic and Avant are also still quite close and I don’t blame anyone for putting them in the other order. This race for fifth is going to get super-exciting.

Let Reece know what you think of his power rankings on Twitter @LoLTies

Top half of the ladder remains stable with no shifts.

The bottom half is another matter. All four teams, are exceptionally close. Starting in 5th, Bombers were able to defeat Tectonic 2-0 and for that reason they are placed at the top of the bunch as the only team to pick up a game.

For the bottom three strength of schedule separates Legacy/Avant from Tectonic. Legacy and Avant being interchangeable, and for me Avant did not quite do enough to place higher despite a close game 2 against The Chiefs.

Let Callum know what you think of his power rankings on Twitter @CDMLoL

Another week, another series win for Dire Wolves. Chiefs pick up what was a much closer 2-0 win over Avant than I had anticipated, playing from behind is becoming a trend for them.

ORDER and MAMMOTH keep the same spots in my rankings they did last week, but the bottom four have changed yet again.

Bombers picking up a 2-0 over Tectonic edged them a little higher than Legacy this week but for me, 5th & 6th are very close and 7th & 8th are just as close to each other as well. It was amazing to finally see Value play, and boy did he not disappoint. I’m excited to see more from him.

Dire Wolves holding onto their undefeated run keeps them in first place.

Chiefs with the win over ORDER has them sitting in second place comfortably.

Bottom end of the rankings is the hardest to rank. While Tectonic have been impressive early this split, without some consistency could see them sliding down further.

Let Andrew know what you think of his power rankings on Twitter @AWray7

Top of the race is pretty static I think. The only thing I have here to note is that I think that Chiefs and ORDER played two pretty close games, and MAMMOTH and Avant played three games as well. If ORDER had been put away with ease, or if MAMMOTH had handled Avant comfortably then 3 and 4 becomes a big mess. As it is I think it’s close, but clear between MAMMOTH and ORDER, but MAMMOTH are rising with a bullet.

Tectonic fall into the pit of the bottom four with some really baffling stuff from them over the last couple of weeks. Two ugly games from them were matched only by one really smelly game from Legacy which made Tectonic look competitive in game 2.

Speaking of making people look competitive, there are those that might question the order I have the bottom 2 in, and I’m just going to be blunt and say I put absolutely no stock in their win over the Dire Wolves. On rare occasions we’ve seen Shernfire willingly gift a game over to the other team and while you do need to be good enough to catch the throw, the Bombers weren’t good enough to be lifted over Avant from where I was watching. But, as always, this bottom group (four now) is super close together so I’m trying to split them along very fine gradations.

Let Reece know what you think of his power rankings on Twitter @LoLTies

Tectonic… again being forced to use a substitute, take a one position slip losing to Legacy and are yet to pick up a victory against any team not ORDER or Chiefs and have fallen to the bottom half of the ladder and are still very difficult to accurately rank due to these factors.

Legacy’s rise while a large rise however, is far closer to expectations of the roster whom had fallen to eighth in the previous week having failed to find consistency between matches. Hopefully this marks a turning point in the split and Legacy begin to find their groove coming into the back end.

As for the bottom two while both picking up wins in their respective series, Bombers and Avant slip to the bottom two positions with Legacy’s rise. The shift created by Legacy’s victory is largely in part to how close these three teams have been. Arguments can definitely be made for the ordering of the bottom three with Tectonic starting to slide down the ladder.

Let Callum know what you think of his power rankings on Twitter @CDMLoL

I’m in line with the Community this week (something I thought I would never say just a couple of weeks ago). The Dire Wolves and the Chiefs undoubtedly are the top 2. While the games were close, ORDER failed to pick up a game win against Chiefs.

Legacy prevailing over Tectonic in a 2-0 I didn’t expect, nor was it particularly clean from them but I’m happy to see them up off the bottom of the rankings.

Bombers edge out AV only because they took a game off the Wolves, although even then they looked unbeatable and remain undefeated.

Dire Wolves find themselves pretty much in a league of their own after a 2-0 win over the Chiefs.

ORDER just edge out the Chiefs after Chiefs go 0-2 to DW, next week will provide clarity on the order for the top 3. MAMMOTH come in at 4th after putting the brakes on Tectonic’s momentum.

Legacy find themselves languishing at the foot of the rankings after suffering a heavy loss to Avant.

Let Andrew know what you think of his power rankings on Twitter @AWray7

Fairly straight-forward list this week I think. CHF/ORD is becoming close, as Chiefs have been belted twice in a row, and ORDER continue to rise with a bullet since the Tectonic loss.

MAMMOTH really showed the league something this week, I felt. Chippys put Papryze to the sword and the rest of Tectonic was made to look similarly ordinary. The real squirming takes place at the foot of the ladder. I think these three teams are super-close together which makes splitting them tough.

In the end I think that the Bombers’ win is the most likely to be a fluke among these, so they slot into 8th and of the two remaining teams AV just took the head-to-head, so that’s how they end up. I don’t think there’s any ranking of these three teams where I would definitively say that it was wrong.

Let Reece know what you think of his power rankings on Twitter @LoLTies

After another week of the OPL and moving forward to the second half of the split, the standings yet remain unstable.

… Outside of the top two. Chiefs and Dire Wolves having played each other this week were only threatening an ordering shift, and after a 2-0 to the Wolf Pack, no shift was necessary.

Moving into the middle of the pack, Tectonic are once again forced to play with a substitute and while they had been able to beat both Chiefs and ORDER 2-0 with such conditions, succumb to MAMMOTH, seeing them fall down to 5th with both ORDER and MAMMOTH shifting one and two positions respectfully.

The bottom of the ladder, is honestly quite a bit of a shock, being forced to move Legacy down into 8th place following a 2-0 defeat to Avant. Unfortunately for Legacy, Avant remain their kryptonite. That being said, I do not think that this ranking truly represents the ceiling of the team and fully expect them to bounce back in the latter half of the split.

And I say this for the vast majority of the teams in the OPL, as I do not believe that teams are yet to perform at their ceilings, and if they have, on a consistent basis. Being a contributing factor in the fluctuations in the Power Rankings that was not seen in Split 1.

Let Callum know what you think of his power rankings on Twitter @CDMLoL

Some shock results this weekend. I honestly believed this would be the weekend we get 12 games of League of Legends, but instead we got the bare minimum in 8. 4 2-0s. Dire Wolves are still looking like they’re not dropping a series anytime soon, while ORDER continue to be on form.

MAMMOTH taking out the dark horses in Tectonic I did expect, once I found out Value was yet again not going to be able to play. The bottom of the standings was a little tougher. Certainly not expecting the 2-0 for Avant (well done lads, out of the slump), and heartbreaking to see Legacy at the bottom of the ladder and the bottom of my rankings.

Dire Wolves slide into first place for me, first on the ladder and yet to drop a series, fairly self explanatory.

Tectonic are controversially in second place, their previous three weeks have been ORDER 2-0, Dire Wolves 0-2, Chiefs 2-0. While they did lose to Avant in week 1, the recency of taking out what most people would consider title contenders puts them at 2nd. They should be considered a threat to the competition.

Chiefs have their first loss and as a result have the first set of chinks in their armour, a team I personally had at the top of the rankings for so long. After losing to Tectonic, I’ve been left wondering how they’ll fare against ORDER and Dire Wolves. Perhaps not as dominant as I first thought? Week 5 should straighten out my doubts.

ORDER had a hard fought win over MAMMOTH, they’re recovering from their shaky start of the season. Expected losses for legacy and MAMMOTH keep them where they are, while a win over Avant have given Bombers a move up the rankings.

Let Andrew know what you think of his power rankings on Twitter @AWray7

DW solidify themselves as first after a great victory over Legacy. Chiefs over Tectonic might look weird given the weekend’s results but one win doesn’t surpass the entirety of the Chiefs’ season. These two are now very close, however.

ORDER edge Legacy for the next spot despite having very similar wins (BMR/MMM and AV/MMM) and a very similar loss (TTC and CHF) due largely to how strong they looked against DW respectively. Otherwise I think these teams have looked pretty equal in strength.

I have MAMMOTH has the 6th best team, and Bombers just behind them but it will be interesting to see how each of these teams approach cross-group play. MAMMOTH need to convert some of these game wins into match wins to keep getting the benefit of the doubt here as they’ve dropped three on the bounce. AV, alas, rounds up the rear. I can’t explain what happened last week, they just laid a massive egg. Hopefully we see them rebound strongly with a couple of weeks to fix things.

Another week, another upset.

Tectonic is turning the OPL on its head. Surprising many coming out the gate 2-2, with arguably the toughest schedule – and doing so with substitutes. Despite 2-0ing CHF, it is not quite enough for me to put them in second place just yet. Tectonic are definitely proving themselves a threat in the OPL, despite all the substitutions and inconsistency it will be very interesting to see how far Value can push them once he is finally able to make his debut.

Moving further down the ladder, despite being placed in 7th in the OPL Rankings, in my power rankings I have Legacy in 5th, having both taken close wins over MMM and BMR but also due to strength of schedule having faced both CHF and DW. They’re in a close contest with MAMMOTH for 5th place.

This current top 4 for me is as tight as it gets, with the Wolves having a slight edge over the rest. Tectonic continue to prove to all that the OPL is indeed not ready for Trance, taking down the Chiefs in a surprise 2-0.

ORDER continue to look like the dominant team from Split 1, and the Dire Wolves seem to be back to business as usual. The Bombers with their win over Avant have now made it off the bottom of my rankings for the first time since the preview week.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Chiefs and Tectonic this week are tied for 2nd.

Contenders Team Spotlight: Finalists https://legacy.snowballesports.com/2018/07/01/team-spotlight-finalists/ Sun, 01 Jul 2018 06:00:09 +0000 https://snowballesports.com/?p=1895

The finalists from last seasons Contenders are the only teams to not face major organisational changes. Given their success, you’d expect that.

Trying to keep the core together is crucial for these teams, while trying to pinch that extra bit of talent or two just to truly round out your roster and really hail for that winners title.

Season 2 will consist of a 6 week regular season, with the grand final being held at Rod Laver Arena during the Melbourne Esports Open.

Blank Blue, Dark Sided, Masterminds and Sydney Drop Bears all return to Season 2 Contenders with only one goal – winning.

If you’re unfamiliar with Overwatch roster roles, here’s a handy key.

Competitive Overwatch Roles

Blank Blue

Although Blank Blue might live in the shadow of their sister team, Blank Esports, they are by no means weak. The team of local young guns will be looking to replicate the main teams Pacific success back home in Australia after falling excruciatingly close last season. A 2nd place finish in their group in Season 1 set them up for a favourable playoffs spot, where they beat JAM Gaming 3-0. However, at LAN, they fell down to Masterminds GC, who had stormed off an almost perfect 19 and 0 regular season on their way to the grand final.

Blank Blue Contenders Roster

After restructuring and refocusing we’re looking to take our tournament run deep into Rod Laver Arena
– Smash, Coach for Blank Blue

The team has only made one change coming into Season 2, with the addition of “Aetar” from JAM Gaming. Casting Season 1 grudges aside after being knocked out by Blank Blue in playoffs, “Aetar” will provide a boost in the hitscan DPS department for Blank Blue. “Micro” will be moving to the bench as a result of the change, but knowing substitutes in Overwatch, we could definitely see a bit of rotation between the two to shake things up.

“Smash”, Blank Blue’s coach told us that the team is positive and they are setting their sights on the finals again, “After restructuring and refocusing we’re looking to take our tournament run deep into Rod Laver Arena.” In a season where there’s so many teams in with a chance of making it to the Melbourne Esports Open LAN, Blank Blue will surely have a few tricks up their sleeves to make it there.

Dark Sided

Dark Sided had a very strong group stage finish, with a map record of 18-2, placing just behind Masterminds. However, they weren’t able to make it to the final as they placed 3rd. They had a very close semi-final with Drop Bears, but fell short with their 2 – 3.

Dark Sided Contenders Roster

The team are confident they will get the win in the opening match.
– Project, Coach for Dark Sided

In a trend that is becoming seemingly common among the teams, they have shaken up their roster with a completely new set of players for Contenders Season 2.

Coach “Project” had a few things to say about matchmaking vs tournament and growth in the Australian region:

“It would’ve been nice for the meta the players are on to stay relevant to their matchmaking experience but with Blizzard’s patching and tournament schedule that will never be the case. I feel this hinders the growth of the game and players as there is no support in this region to learn the multitude of heroes required to participate at the top level.”

On their opening match against Masterminds in week 1, “Project” stated: “The team are confident they will get the win in the opening match.”

Masterminds

Masterminds had an excellent run in the first season of Contenders and were on top after the group stages. However, they were not able to secure the win in the finals, with the Sydney Drop Bears proving too strong.

Masterminds Contenders Roster

We’ve never missed a LAN since the start of Overwatch in this region, and this Contenders season will be no different.
– Polter, Co-owner of Masterminds

They have featured many roster changes this year such as “Knellery”, “Dalsu”, “Tails” and “Colourhex” all leaving the team.

The Masterminds co-owner “Polter”, spoke with us about these changes: “After finishing 2nd in season 1 a lot has changed for us during the off season with James “Taki” Daskalou being the only remaining player from that roster. To the naked eye it appears we have come off the worst from the latest roster shuffle, but we have some extremely talented players who are out to prove their worth against the best in the region.“

They are no doubt ready to take the title from Drop Bears as “Polter” explains their dedication to practising: “We’ve never missed a LAN since the start of Overwatch in this region, and this contenders season will be no different. We look forward to redeeming ourselves and taking 1st place in Melbourne.”

Masterminds certainly have a lot of motivation to win this season.

Sydney Drop Bears

In the group stages of Season 1 the Sydney Drop Bears were 0-4’d by Masterminds. However they then went on to become the inaugural winners of clean sweeping Masterminds right back with a 4-0 in the grand final.

Sydney Drop Bears Contenders Roster

“The team is extremely confident in our ability to defend our Australia Contenders title”
– Face, Coach for the Sydney Drop Bears

Interestingly, the Drop Bears picked up “Colourhex” from Masterminds in the off-season. Speaking of the roster change, Drop Bears Coach “Face” explained: “We picked up ‘Colourhex’ who has really lent a lot of flexibility and skill to our roster and has been meshing well with the team.”

On their focus for the upcoming season, he said: “Right now, we are primarily focusing on getting a grasp on the new meta and increasing our synergy together as a team. Moving into the new season, the team is extremely confident in our ability to defend our Australia Contenders title and we can only improve from here.”

The Sydney Drop Bears sound confident and are looking to fight tooth and nail to keep their title as the current Contenders Australia champions.

Season 2 of Overwatch Contenders Australia starts tomorrow, Monday 2nd July at 12pm AEST. Tickets are now also available for the grand final at the Melbourne Esports Open – find them here.

OPL Power Rankings: Split 2, Week Three https://legacy.snowballesports.com/2018/06/25/opl-power-rankings-split-2-week-three/ Mon, 25 Jun 2018 02:55:35 +0000 https://snowballesports.com/?p=1674 Welcome to the Snowball Esports OPL Power Rankings for Split 2, Week Three.

A return to form for some teams, and some surprise game losses for others in Week 3 of the OPL. Our panel this split consists of Snowball’s own Andrew Wray, Reece Perry, Callum Matthews and Swifty.  Callum was unable to do rankings this week, in his place we have another amazing guest contributor – Ellis Longhurst.  New for power rankings this split is the Community slot.  These are made up of our community panel’s individual personal power rankings, averaged together.

Claire tweeted after the series that he felt his team was warranting play that deserves rift rival status, hard to disagree after MAMMOTH couldn’t get the job done after their first mid table encounter.

ORDER have sent the rest of the competition a message bouncing back in a dominant performance, after Avant showed promising signs against the Dire Wolves in week 2, ORDER put a big dent in their playoff credentials.

Bombers taking games off Legacy and Chiefs is really making a case to take them off the bottom of the rankings but Tectonic having a series win keeps them just above.

The Dire Wolves edge Chiefs by the narrowest of margins. These two are super-tight but the way they dropped game 2 was disappointing and the Wolfpack are ramping up. I believe that Chiefs’ mistakes are easily fixed and I’d back them to do so but that doesn’t factor into a power ranking.

Legacy leap to the top of the still-incredibly-tight congestion that is third to seventh. Trying to make fine gradations among the “let’s just split with each other” pack of ORDER/Avant/Tectonic is tough. In the end I looked to how they did against the Wolves to split them.

Avant and ORDER were both strong, so ORDER gets the nod due to head-to-head. Avant slots in behind them, and Tectonic take seventh. Again, these five places are incredibly close together in my mind.

The top two spots oscillate between Dire Wolves and Chiefs. This week, Dire Wolves take first because they secured a 2-0, while Chiefs lost a game to clear bottom of the OPL ladder- Bombers (whose own performance has moved them up my power rankings this week).

Fifth through eighth were determined by this week’s match records against the top four as well as strength of play during the matches. Very little splits the teams in the section previously known by EGym as “irrelevant” – fourth to eighth place.

With Dire Wolves getting a 2-0 this week and Chiefs dropping a game to last-placed Bombers, my top two has shifted.

ORDER have bounced back with a very dominant 2-0 over Avant, who have fallen to 6th. Legacy (apart from game 2) in their series against MAMMOTH look to have returned to form.

I’m keen to see what Tectonic can do next week with Value playing.
