Reigning Coach of the Split Bencel is with us again to break down who was the best player for each of our OPL teams in Week Eight. Check out who put in the best performance for your team below! Player images courtesy of oce.lolesports.com

ORDER: Tally

Tally continues to be the rock in the top for Order. While Order continued their trend of being sloppy against all levels of opponent, Tally himself never seems to falter. Specifically his tank play has been his greatest achievement this split. Gnar gives him the opportunity to flex both sides of his play and I think in this series he solidifies his ability to play tanks with the best tops in the league.

Legacy: Sybol

What a change from Sybol. His ability to get midgame vision on tanks has been extremely questionable, in the games that are even. On Kha’Zix Sybol knew how to get ahead and what to do with his lead, which is something we haven’t been able to say about him this split. He does however still get hyphy at times which can let him down in high pressure moments. Let’s hope we see him on more carries and I think more bans will be thrown his way to his credit.

Sin: Bdoink

Once again Sin make life difficult in picking their most consistent player over 3 games. Praedyth and Dream had good series but simply got caught out too many times inexcusably. So this week I give it to Bdoink who was able to stay safe and clear waves on Viktor, while also putting out some decent damage in team fights. The question for Sin going into next split is still ‘Can you put together a match where everyone plays at their best every game?’

AV: Jayke

AV have had a standout performer every week. But every week I find myself slotting Jayke into number 2 or 3. Another quiet achiever in the league but Jayke has been a great engage threat on Alistar this split, as well as his usual skill on peel duty as Tahm Kench and Nami. This week though Jayke had a Bard performance that tipped him over the edge in my book. His stellar ultimates really made the difference in game 3 against Sin and earned him MVP. Perhaps more playmaking from Jayke is something AV will look to going into playoffs.

Dire Wolves: Shernfire

What should’ve been a cakewalk for Dire Wolves this week turned into a bit of a messy affair. The bot side of the map looked all out of sorts for the first time in the split. Shernfire and Chippys in the meanwhile continued on their merry way, racking up huge gold leads that allowed Dire Wolves to soar to two quick wins. I give the edge to Shernfire over Chippys this week because despite his bot side capitulating, he still managed to maintain control over the river and all of it’s delicious objectives.

Tectonic: Tilting

Signs of life from Tectonic in the lane phase but once again, when the game exits lane phase, they seem to lack proactivity. But on the plus side Tilting did a lot of work with roaming. This is something we haven’t really seen from the Tectonic bot lane so something new is always a pleasant sight. He set up some skirmishes that would give Tectonic a fighting chance going into the mid game.

Chiefs: Destiny

Times were tough for Chiefs in game 1 and once again when the chips were down their bot lane stood tall. Raes and Destiny pulled Chiefs from the brink of a huge upset with precision team fighting. You can see how much faith Chiefs put in their bot lane when it comes to how they are gonna play late game team fights. Everyone rallies around Raes and Destiny hits his buttons at the exact right moments and it all comes together. Only by a hair’s breadth do I put Destiny ahead of Raes this week because of the one time Raes got caught out by Sleeping. Game 2 was a stomp and the Chiefs were all over the Bombers from the get go.

Bombers: Rosey

Rosey has had a few really good Alistar games this split and this week was no exception. He hit some crucial combos and has looked good on these engage supports outside of lane phase. Sleeping had an amazing game 1 but was once again let down by his inconsistency. Sleeping still needs to find his feet to be a real threat to the top teams in split 2. Rosey could be the difference maker in the match against Legacy next week on picks like Morgana or Alistar so it will be interesting to see how Legacy handle it.

Bencel’s MVPs of the Week: Week Seven https://legacy.snowballesports.com/2018/03/09/bencels-mvps-of-the-week-week-seven/ Fri, 09 Mar 2018 02:56:37 +0000 https://snowballesports.com/?p=1246

Reigning Coach of the Split Bencel is with us again to break down who was the best player for each of our OPL teams in Week Seven. Check out who put in the best performance for your team below! Player images courtesy of oce.lolesports.com

Avant: Only

Only was all over the map this week. He was able to keep up with Swathe in farm on Jax in game 1. Later in that game he showed some excellent team fighting on a champion that is difficult to execute on. He tied up multiple members of the enemy back line while having very little gold to do so. Game 2 he was given the role of outpacing the enemy jungler as Nidalee. He successfully helped his team get through the early game and transition into their poke comp.

Tectonic: Shok

Game 1 Papryze had a bigger impact, but throughout both games Shok was once again the only player to stay consistent on the Tectonic lineup. Shok managed to not get caught out by Jayke’s Alistar in game 2 where the rest of his team failed. For a team that is still struggling to find their identity and transition leads, much weight falls on the shoulders of their most consistent member who acts as the cornererstone for now.

Bombers: Looch

Not only did Looch demonstrate some depth in his champion pool this week, but he still is a beastly threat on safe scaling carries like Corki. Karma is not a champion Looch would normally be associated with but he showed he can facilitate his team while being the biggest threat on the map. This is a good look for Looch and yet another positive thing we can say about Bombers prospects looking at split 2.

Sin: Cuden

This may have been the hardest team to pick an MVP from all split. I think you could comfortably pick almost any other player in this series from Sin and have valid reasons as to why they would be your MVP. This is where my bias for consistency comes in and is why I give it to Cuden this week for Sin. Cuden has definitely become more a playmaker compared to last time we saw him in the OPL. On a champion like Braum he goes forward way more and growth like that is really good to see. He does a great job of keeping Dream safe when the game is capitulating around them and I think Sin’s bot lane have proven to be a solid pair.

Chiefs: Destiny

Chiefs’ carries have been the beneficiaries of some of the best setups in the entire league. Swiper and Babip do a great job in their own right of starting fights for their carry members. However you can’t go past Destiny when it comes to taking decisive action. This man has been on the ball with his engages and quick thinking to turn fights around. Of all the bot lanes in the league he and Raes have shown they are the quickest at thinking on their feet and turning bad looking situations around.

Legacy: Mimic

Legacy have been playing with Mimic in the side lanes a lot recently. Their core 4 members of the 4-1 have been looking extremely shaky in their ability to get vision around objectives and manage wave priority around mid. This has meant more reliance on Mimic to create pressure for his team. His laning phase is looking cleaner and his timing on when to group or split has looked better too. Legacy still have a lot to work on to compete with the top 3 but the pieces are there.

ORDER: Swiffer

Swiffer has slowly been rising from his slump and this week he looked almost back to his old self. Games 1 and 2 I would say he was more impactful than Triple, which at this stage is no easy feat. He commanded the map more and combined well with Spookz to have control over mid lane. This has not been a consistent factor for Order this split. The timing on Swiffer’s ultimates in team fights is something he still does better than any other oceanic mid and I would stamp as his trademark.

Dire Wolves: Chippys

Chippys has been able to take a back seat for the middle part of this season to his mid laner and bot lane. They have been doing most of the heavy lifting in the early parts of the games. This week it was time for Chippys to accept his promotion to veteran status. When the times were tough, he showed up big time. Chippys is really a feast or famine sort of player. He plays selfishly on champions like Camille and Gangplank and really puts a lot of pressure on himself to be the one to carry. Once he has items the games often hinge on how impactful he can be in a side lane or entering a team fight late. This week was a good one for Chippys, and on his good weeks it doesn’t matter who the opposition is he has the ability to tear them to shreds.

Players to watch in the last leg before Playoffs

Mimic

Mimic has been extremely inconsistent from his first weeks in the OPL to now. However we have seen marked improvement in his Teleport play and team play overall. Whether he can continue this upward trend will be crucial to his team’s performance going into playoffs.

Shernfire

This is another player who has been up and down in his performances. He has performed far better on carry junglers in recent times. It will be interesting to see if teams start to target him (really for the first time) while the rest of his team is doing so well.

Frae

Started the season very weak but is only just now starting to put his laning phase and team play together. Unfortunately it’s just at a point where AV are starting to look lackluster in their early games. Early in the season we could point to Frae as the weak link for AV in the laning phase, but arguably that has been flipped on it’s head in recent weeks. Will Frae be the one to turn around AV’s fortune before playoffs?

Raes

Some games Raes has looked like the best player in the league. He can have the best positioning and deal the most damage almost no matter the state of the game. But at other times Raes can be prone to some really poor decision making. If he can resist these rushes of blood and rely more on his exceptional team fighting, then Chiefs will be hard to beat.

Rogue

Rogue has been a quiet achiever for Order this split. In a meta where supports mainly aren’t relied upon to do anything flashy for their team, he has been super consistent. Riot are making hefty changes all the time and if Rogue can be unlocked then Order’s bot lane may take over games even more than they already are.

MVP Leaderboard at the “Halfway” Point

Claire – 4
Destiny – 3
FBI – 3
Looch – 3
Shok – 3
Tiger – 3

What does this tell us?

I think it’s fair to say so far this season it has been a time for mid laners to shine. When they can play champions like Zoe, Azir and Ryze they really have the opportunity to be making a lot of plays and to throw their weight around the map. These champions also have the ability to output a lot of damage in team fights making them all around solid meta picks until they are severely nerfed.

It also tells us that no team in the OPL is being more one man carried than Legacy. Not to tarnish Claire’s achievements so far this split, he has been the best player in the league so far and an inspiration for his team.

Keep in mind half the teams have played 6 rounds and the other half only 5 so the list is not gonna be completely balanced until super week is finished. Also some players didn’t have the opportunity to play for their teams in every match so far.

Avant: Blinky

Putting Blinky on Kog’Maw for all 3 games really put the pressure on him to be a big damage threat for his team this week. I have been very critical of Blinky for a long time with his on and off performances, but this week he really shouldered the burden and carried his team. Blinky has often had problems with going forward and back at the wrong times on champions like Tristana. This week however he moved forward and back like the best ADC’s in the region and it was really great to see.

Tectonic: Low

Most weeks we have been looking to Shok on Tectonic to be responsible for the lion’s share of the damage. This week Low showed some diversity in what champions he can be successful with. Usually Low would be associated with the utility style carries such as Sivir and Varus but he went with the more mobile, ability based carries this week in Tristana and Ezreal. Diversity is something I always value highly when assessing a players progression.

Chiefs: Destiny

Ryoma and Raes both looked good in this series but had some serious lapses that made it hard to pick them as the MVP. Destiny on the other hand looked solid as a rock and once again is setting up his team like no other support in the OPL. I would really like to highlight Destiny’s Alistar as a really strong pick right now. I think it will become a contested pick or ban for teams against Chiefs in the coming weeks if it isn’t already. The confidence he shows on the dives and lack of hesitation to pull the trigger on flash combos is simply awesome.

Legacy: Mimic

Legacy looked all out of sorts this week. Mimic was definitely the one who stayed strong in all three games. At times his laning is questionable in particular when it comes to interacting with his jungler Sybol. However his team fighting and ability to outplay ganks are definitely his strong points right now. He is also drawing a lot of bans for someone who is still performing well on his 4th and 5th best champions. Legacy are still finding their identity but Mimic seems to fit well into one where he can be left on his own and relied upon to show up in team fights.

Bombers: Looch

Another sad week for the Bombers and disappointing to see they haven’t improved their team play. The members are getting caught around the map at bizarre times and they don’t seem to be on the same page around objectives. Looch is the only one who isn’t consistently flubbing his positioning at critical moments. He does lack proactivity where the other members all seem to at least have some. The problem is they all want to be proactive at different times and it just looks like a mess.

SIN: Bdoink

Another great week for Bdoink. Juves set up the fights really well in games 2 and 3 to lead Sin to victory but Bdoink’s team fight target prioritisation and positioning were impeccable. He was able to turn 1v2s and his team was there to back him up. The communication is starting to look good on the Sin side and you have to look at the duo of Juves and Bdoink as the main factor here. I doubt teams will give Bdoink the Cassiopeia into Ryze matchup in future weeks.

Dire Wolves: Triple

Dire Wolves bot lane really stepped up this week. Cupcake and King both had stellar performances which made it really hard to pick an MVP for Dire Wolves and if I could pick 3 I would. Choosing between King and Triple was so tough. They both came up super clutch in team fights and dealt loads of damage. I ended up going with Triple because his play is really what kept them in game 2 while King was struggling in that game. This week Dire Wolves showed why they are the best team. They have carry threat from every role.

ORDER: Rogue

Some good team fighting from Rogue this week. But really we can’t go past his game 2 Thresh play. This game solidified him as the best thresh player OCE has ever produced and the fact that he kept capping Shernfire made this game all the sweeter. Playing against Rogue’s Thresh when your responsibility is to ward for your team must be one of the most frustrating things to face in our region and he reminded us of this fact in this game. His Taric ultimates were pretty good too.

The Chiefs: Destiny

Rakan is seen as a risky pick in this meta. Against the other tanky supports he lacks the same survivability, especially without Courage of the Colossus. The best time is still with Xayah but even then you have to work hard to make him worthwhile. Destiny showed this week he can execute on champions both in and out of meta. Every successful fight this week, for the Chiefs, was off the back of Destiny catching the Tectonic backline. The Chiefs bot lane is looking strong and scary with their first week together on stage.

Tectonic: Swathe

Tectonic looked livelier in the mid-late game this week. In no small part thanks to the more decisive nature of their engages. This can be chalked up to Swathe’s Zac, looking more confident to go in for his team and set up team fights. They are still struggling to get into the opposition side of the map and stay there, but the team seems to be growing in confidence week to week.

ORDER: Tally

Two games of Gangplank and two stellar performances from Tally. Tally was gifted his best champion in both games against Sin who were clearly hoping to shut him down with a counterpick. Tally was however, up to the task and did a lot of work for Order in team fights. He soldiered through the tough lane phases and when FBI’s positioning faltered this week, Tally was the one who rose to the occasion. A good look for Order at a time when we wanted to see more from their top side of the map.

Sin Gaming: Bdoink

Every week Sin have one player who is the rock for their team. And no I’m not talking about Juves outside of the game. I’m talking about Bdoink this week. Bdoink has played against some strong mid laners thus far and stood up to all of them. A player who was surrounded by question marks coming into this split has shown he can more than hold his own and be a big damage threat for his team. Good to see this on a champion he wouldn’t normally be associated with in Azir is an added bonus.

Avant Gaming: Pabu

AV looked solid across the board this week so picking their best player was not easy. I looked at the player who had the most map presence and showed decisiveness in their decision making and once again that was Pabu. Pabu threw his weight around the map constantly, threatening engages on Legacy’s carries at all times, not hesitating to pull the trigger on Call of the Forge God when his team was grouped.

Legacy: Claire

Clearly the standout player for his team this week. There is a reason that whenever Claire got picked, Legacy would collapse all around the map. Claire was the one setting up the picks for Legacy and doing the majority of the damage in team fights. His Zoe will no doubt be the target of pick ban phases in weeks to come with teams seeing him as the linchpin of the Legacy lineup.

Dire Wolves: Shernfire

He is back. The game dialogue felt something along the lines of “don’t feed boys this one is on me”. The Dire Wolves looked great this week against a full strength Bombers roster. Shernfire commanded the game with his usual gusto. Marching around the rift as if it were his own, killing more things on the map than anyone else and being an unstoppable machine when he finally appeared from the fog. A resounding return and a statement match for Shernfire.

Bombers: Looch

The only one who seemed to put up resistance this week was Looch. He stuck to his scaling team fighting mages and was able to do some damage and hit some critical spells but it proved too big a mountain to climb against the Dire Wolves. It was good to see Looch back but we didn’t get to see anything different from his previous playstyle. He still farms passively and doesn’t seem to interact with his own jungler to create pressure in the early game. Hopefully the Bombers will build more synergy before it’s too late for a surge.

Bombers: Tiger

Once again Tiger shows up with a stellar performance. The front line faltered heavily on this occasion but still he managed to navigate team fights dealing out significant damage. He remained a constant threat for Order to deal with almost no matter the gold lead. Game 1 on Caitlyn he outplayed a lot of engage and made a lot of health bars flash red but couldn’t deal the killing blows. So game 2 he went onto Tristana but again his front line melted before his eyes and he was unable to pick up the pieces.

ORDER: FBI

Order were a bit all over the place but FBI remained the most solid member of the lineup. Order played a tank heavy style in game 1 where he was relied upon for the brunt of the damage and he executed well. In game 2, arguably Swiffer was targeted more heavily in the team fights on his Azir, but FBI was not to be underestimated as he continued to pump out extremely accurate Mystic Shots.

Avant Gaming: Only

This week the task for Only was once again to get Pabu ahead. This time AV and Pabu could not transition their lead into anything substantial. The finger has to be pointed at the shotcalling and item choices of AV on this occasion. Some suspect build coordination between Pabu and Frae meant AV had to execute perfectly on their fights and playing around their split pressure. Only did his best in the engages with Frae for the Cataclysmic Entrances but the damage from the carry members was not there on the day.

The Chiefs: Ryoma

On Azir both games, Ryoma demonstrated his ability to command an army of the sand and Shurima Shuffle Chiefs to victory. He scooped multiple members of AV into his team on several critical occasions to pull the game back into Chiefs control after a questionable early game. Ryoma did the vast majority of his teams damage with nearly 40% in both games. Ryoma definitely picked up the slack without Raes in the lineup and I expect them to look like title contenders when he returns.

Dire Wolves: Chippys

A lot of credit needs to be given to Praelus for his last OPL performance at least for now, but who really deserves the credit for the DW early game? As someone who has coached Chippys I understand how he commands his jungler and I would credit him with the successful leads gained through top side against Sin. He controlled this game from start to finish as a good maestro should. Once again without his star jungler Shernfire. The other members showed slight improvements over last week but Chippys continues to demonstrate he is in a different class of top laner.

Sin Gaming: Dream

Quick losses for Sin this week didn’t give them much opportunity to show what they’ve learned.  So here I looked for the person who made the least mistakes. That was Dream this week. His positioning at all points of the skirmishes was relatively on point given the situation his team was in. Arguably there is nowhere that is safe for a Varus against a Malzahar, Shyvana, Evelynn or Gangplank when they have such big leads. But Dream did well to stay even in farm as his team crumbled around him.

Legacy: Claire

Last week Claire was slightly outshined by Raid’s almost flawless play. This week the two swapped places and Claire was the one with the flawless team fighting and ridiculous damage output. The moments he chose to go aggressive on Azir and the seamless kiting on Malzahar were simply beautiful to watch. I would just like to mention he ended the 34 minute game on Azir with 417 CS, a number that a mid laner from any region would be proud of!

Tectonic: Shok

Tectonic had a very simple game plan this week and that was to survive the early game. They didn’t seem to know how to engage once they had their items but when they played reactive there were some promising signs once again. Swathe and Papryze had decent early games but couldn’t navigate the majority of team fights. Shok looked good though, particularly in game 2 on his Cassiopeia, which was has always been one of his best picks. He constantly denied Raid entry into the fights on his Vayne. If Tectonic can understand their initiation conditions they could become a real threat.

Dire Wolves: Chippys

The task was big this week for Chippys when DW faced off against Chiefs without their star jungler Shernfire. The pressure on him to carry was greater than usual and against Swiper it was a big ask but Chippys showed he could meet the challenge and carried his team with some exquisite team fighting on Vladimir and ability to survive the Gangplank into Camille matchup with ease.

The Chiefs: Destiny

Forced to lane with mid laner Phantiks in bot lane, Destiny showed he could protect even the most vulnerable carries. With Raes I expect Destiny to shine more but I think he was the standout performer with game saving Tahm and Braum play. He showed a strong grasp of the best 3 meta support champions on the current patch.

ORDER: FBI

This match was expected to be a stomp for Order and it was just a question of who would shine the most on this team of carries. FBI got the most attention and enabling from his team on this occasion and he made good use of it. He never fails to output tonnes of damage and putting him on Kog’Maw and his beloved Ezreal demonstrated this immensely.

Tectonic: Shok

We saw great signs from a team that no one had expectations for and Shok was the key component here. Typically a player who leans on safe control mages, he pulled out the dubious Urgot mid pick and had really solid team fighting in both games. This is a team that once they learn to survive the early game and recognise their strengths in team fighting can make beating them a hard task for any opponent.

Sin Gaming: Praedyth

Good and bad moments from everyone on Sin this week but overall in team fighting and laning phase Praedyth proved himself to be Sins trump card. The team is definitely still learning how to divide their resources but I expect more of Juves’ and Bdoink’s attention to go to Praedyth in coming weeks as the team learns how to convert their early game leads.

Legacy: Raid

Almost flawless play from Raid this week, in particular in his team fighting. Raid has always been a player who played extremely low risk but his damage in team fights was always questionable. This week was the first step to removing that stigma and he showed he is a carry force to be targeted by other teams.

Bombers: Tiger

In a very one-sided affair against AV it was hard to find something positive from the Bombers but Tiger was the most consistent member this week. Despite his team having rough early games all across the map he stayed even in cs and managed to be safe in team fights. With more time I expect some big carry performances from him.

Avant Gaming: Pabu

Pabu always seems to have the most question marks over him when he joins a team. People have an expectation that he wants to be carrying but in reality he wants to do what his team needs. His laning has always been up and down but up against the sub in Artaphernes he was expected to win handily, and that he did. Not only this but he was able to translate his lead into baron control and good TP usage which is something we are not used to seeing from him, a great start to the season for him and AV.
