The Failing Uni Kids might be failing something, but it’s certainly not Overwatch, taking down Brian Piccolo 3-1 in the University Esports League Overwatch Brawl Grand Final.
Failing Uni Kids’ roster is made up of a mix of Contenders players old and new, featuring ex-Avant duo SleepEasy and CrimzonWolf, SereNity aim support Forbles, ex-Tainted Minds tank Fullmetal and ex-JAM Gaming duo Yifang and Kaimore.
On the other hand, Brian Piccolo is headed by the gamer god himself, Unter from ORDER. With his coach Smash by his side, Dark Sided support/coach duo Molotov and Project as well as ORDER DPS Aetar and Legacy DPS Tails, this roster on paper is arguably stronger due to the names being thrown around.
However, the Failing Uni Kids are the epitome of “teamwork makes the dream work.” With an abundance of tanks and supports on the roster, GOATS was the name of the game for the Failing Uni Kids. Having taken down Brian Piccolo 2-0 in the Winner’s Final, they came into the UTS Sydney LAN event as favourites, and they showed why from the very start.
Failing Uni Kids started out smoking hot on Lijiang Tower. On Control Tower, they locked Brian Piccolo in spawn after winning the first fight and never looked like conceding control in the GOATS vs GOATS match up. While Aetar swapped onto Pharah for Garden, they failed to find a tick on either map as Failing Uni Kids took the map almost as soon as it started.
Picking defense on Eichenwalde, Failing Uni Kids once again put GOATS to good use, full holding Brian Piccolo before they could start the payload. On their attack, it was a quick waltz onto the point with an obscure 2-2-2 comp featuring Hammond and Pharah.
The talented Brian Piccolo roster appeared clueless as to how to stop the dominant Failing Uni Kids – until Temple of Anubis. Thanks to Tails’ efforts on Widowmaker and a destructive 3 man Dragon Blade from Aetar, Brian Piccolo wiped the floor with Failing Uni Kids on the first round with 6 minutes left in the time bank.
Aetar slices through Failing Uni Kids like butter thanks to Molotov’s Nano Boost, securing Brian Piccolo a 6 minute timebank on Temple of Anubis.
In the post game interview, SleepEasy put this down to the fact that “we can’t run GOATS on [Temple of Anubis],” and while they eventually made it work on their attack Brian Piccolo had too much in the time bank to play with come second round and wiped through Failing Uni Kids to bring one back.
Failing Uni Kids quickly swung back into form on Watchpoint: Gibraltar. While Aetar was able to clean up supports Forbles and SleepEasy with a dragon blade late on their attack, Fullmetal was able to stall for long enough with his Primal Rage to full hold Brian Piccolo.
The attack was swift and straight to the jugular. Uncontested until they came under the bridge, Forbles landed a crucial 5 ball onto Aetar on the sole DPS Genji, allowing the rest of the team to come through for the quick wipe and finish to secure the title.
