Sources close to the team have confirmed that Dire Cubs top laner, Jihoon “Topoon” Kim, will be making the leap into OPL with MAMMOTH for Split 1 2019.
The ex-OCE Rank 1 made waves in the OCS after replacing Brandon “Biopanther” Alexander after his promotion from the Dire Cubs to the Dire Wolves. In 2019, Topoon will have his chance to play against the person he replaced in the top lane on the OPL stage.
Dire Cubs finished fourth in the regular season of OCS 2018, with an 8-5 record. They fell to super team Intuition 1-2 in their semi-final with Aaron “Alani” Brown of ORDER Academy substituting in for Toby “UDYSOF” Brown, who was also promoted into the OPL from OCS by Tectonic.
Topoon replaces ex-Raydere Medalist and Worlds representative Ryan “Chippys” Short on MAMMOTH. MAMMOTH didn’t live up to their firepower expectations in Split 2, failing to qualify for playoffs after importing Kim “REMIND” Hong-ju from LJL and Brandon “Mash” Phan from NA.
Topoon made a mark on OCS with his tank play, namely Gragas, Cho’Gath and Gnar. While he had a rough start to OCS, he slowly worked on his synergy with the Dire Cubs and saw immediate success once he transitioned onto more tank-style tops over carry tops.
With the recruitment of Topoon, it looks like MAMMOTH are taking the path of Dire Wolves and recruiting some of the best up and coming talent in Oceania. While the rest of the roster is yet to be revealed, the pickup of Topoon could help swing MAMMOTH’s luck in 2019 as they look to make their first playoffs as an organisation.
